Maternity Fashion Essentials

My goal has been to purchase as few true maternity clothes as possible, but rather to focus on pieces I can wear as my shape changes through pregnancy and postpartum. That said, there are a few staple pieces I bought in maternity wear: jeans, leggings and tank tops. I rounded up a listing of the most popular (and new!) brands I’ve come across in my research below. The items I marked with an asterisk I tried and I included my review below each.

Leggings

  • Glowe ($150, $10 off with glowe10)

  • Hatch ($128)

  • David Lerner ($100)*

    • Very odd material, returned.

  • Girlfriend ($88)*

    • My favorite non-maternity workout leggings, these delivered in maternity form as well.

  • Spanx ($78)

  • Zella ($65)*

    • Found a pair on sale at Nordstrom and for the price they were keepers.

  • Storq ($65)

  • Blanqui ($64)*

    • Strange material and I found the support engineering to be very constricting.

  • Ingrid & Isabel ($48)

  • Old Navy ($19)*

    • Only suitable for very gentle yoga/loungewear but surprisingly comfy and non-constricting.

  • H&M ($13)*

    • Very sheer, returned.

Jeans

  • DL Emma ($178)*

    • These were pretty good both in terms of cut and color.

  • Paige ($189)*

  • JBrand ($211)*

    • These were insanely long.

  • Madewell ($138)*: Classic Straight (side panel) | Dark wash skinny (side panel) | Black skinny (over the belly)

    • I was a Madewell jean fan pre-pregnancy and these ended up being the winners for me. After trying nearly their entire collection, I ended up with a pair of under the belly in a dark blue wash. While I liked the feel and look of the over the belly style they kept sliding down and without belt loops (like the side panel cut has) they were hard to keep up so I ended up returning.

  • Topshop ($80)*

    • These ended up being a surprise hit!

  • H&M*

    • These were OK and if I need another pair for any reason I might give them another try.

  • Old Navy*

    • These were just comically bad in terms of fit. For example, the waistband of the jean was not flush with the belly band and visibly stuck out.
