Travel Guide: Beacon, NY
Nestled at the base of the Hudson Valley and easily accessible from the city, Beacon is a good introduction to the upstate region. It really shines four seasons a year and is the perfect antidote when you’ve had a bit too much urban hustle.
{Get There/Get Around}
Beacon is an easy journey from New York City on the Metro North Train line. Take the Hudson line from Grand Central and you will be there in about an hour and a half. There is a Beacon shuttle that makes stops around town. There are Ubers as well if you aren't staying in close proximity to the train station or Main Street but be aware that the wait times can be fairly lengthy. Main Street and most of the shops and restaurants are very walkable.
The Roundhouse is the place to stay in Beacon, but it can be quite pricey. There are plentiful Airbnbs, and you can find everything from a quaint one bedroom, like this one we recently stayed in, to larger homes fit for a group or family getaway.
{See & Do}
Dia.Beacon -- When buying your Metro North train ticket you can get a combo package that includes admission to Dia.Beacon. Dia.Beacon is a converted factory, filled with mostly 3D, contemporary works that air to a very industrial aesthetic. There are free tours at 12:30 pm and 2pm daily.
Storm King -- This outdoor art space is just across the Hudson from Beacon.
Hike Mt. Beacon -- Your reward for a steep set of stairs and a stretch of very rocky switchbacks at the ascent is a panoramic view over Beacon and the Hudson River, stretching out over the Catskills and further up the Hudson Valley. There is a small parking lot at the base and the Beacon shuttle makes stops at the trailhead as well.
